Day 96/365 – Tools of the Trade
3192564569 600c04816e Day 96/365 Tools of the Trade

These are my current flames – a Nikon D80 and a Nikon Coolpix S200. I didn’t set out to become a Nikonist, it just sort of happened that way. My first camera was a cheap little snapshot camera that used 110 film. I don’t even remember the manufacturer. The first camera I clearly remember owning was the Polaroid One Shot instant camera I got for Christmas when I was in the sixth grade. At first I had the old school flashbulb strip for it, but later I got the battery operated flash module.

The Polaroid was kind of inconvenient, despite the fact that you got instant prints. It was a bit big and clunky and you wound up having to walk around with a pocketful of photos. After I got tired of the Polaroid I don’t remember owning a camera for a while. I think I just borrowed whatever my parents happened to have at the time. Then in my senior year of high school I took a photography class and had to get my first SLR.

I decided on a Pentax K-1000 because it was cheap and I could get it at the Sears down the road from my house. It was a primitive chunk of metal but I grew to love that camera and took some pretty good pictures with it. In some ways, I think I took better photos with it than I have with any of my subsequent cameras. It had the most basic light meter imaginable – a scale at the side of the viewfinder with a plus at the top, a minus at the bottom, a notch in the middle and a needle that drifted up and down. I had that camera for years until it was stolen from my Jeep while I was in the Navy. After that, I used a crappy little Kodak 35mm point and shoot until I bought a used K-1000 off eBay when I moved up to DC after law school.

It was during a trip to Montreal that I decided maybe it was time to try an automatic SLR. I was sitting beside a trail in Mount Royal Park with some peanuts cupped in my palm as a quartet of squirrels would take turns creeping up and eating out of my hand. That was when I made the brilliant realization that trying to focus a manual SLR one-handed wasn’t easy. I kept leaning forward and backward to try and get the squirrels in focus, with mixed results. I went through a roll and a half of film and got six or seven decent shots. So later after I got home I bought a Nikon N65. I never did get the hang of that camera and I didn’t take very good photos with it. It was a tough camera to warm up to. I only got a Nikon because that was the brand of camera photographers on tv and in the movies were always using.

My first digital camera was a Canon SuperShot 400. It was only 4 megapixels, but it was easy to use and took good pictures. It was too fat to fit easily in my pocket though, so that was annoying. After getting exposed to digital photography I decided to take the plunge and get a digital SLR. I opted for the Nikon D80 because I could still use the flash and zoom lens from my N65 with it. I wonder sometimes if I’d been better off if I’d started down the Canon path instead. They seem more intuitive and user-friendly, but once you pick one and start buying accessories it’s hard to switch to the other and see your investment fall by the wayside. I’m certainly more comfortable with the D80 than I was with the N65 (which I promptly boxed up and mailed off to my youngest niece so she could use it for her photography class) and I think I’ve gotten some pretty good shots with it.

When the memory card door on my SuperShot 400 broke off, I decided to get myself a new point and shoot. I opted for the Nikon Coolpix S200 not through any diehard devotion to Nikon, but because it was really thin and would fit in my pocket more easily than the other cameras at Best Buy. Plus it came in red and I really wanted a red camera. It’s a rather silly reason on which to base a camera buying decision, but still. I took dreadful pictures with it at first and was really frustrated with it. I came close to chucking it and getting different point and shoot, but I kept working with it and I’m finally at the point now that I’m fairly comfortable with using it. It’s a good thing I have it because otherwise I wouldn’t be doing a 365 Project. There’s no way I’d lug my D80 around with me everywhere I go, but with the S200 I can just slip it in my pocket or bag and I’m always ready to shoot.

As for future flames, I’ve been really mulling over the idea of getting a D300. They work well in low light situations and also are good at handling shooting environments that are a mix of shadows and bright light. The D80 definitely has troubles in those situations. Just take a look at Sunday’s 365 entry for evidence of that. My jeans are fine, but the view out the window is overexposed and burned up. There’s no guarantee that shot would have come out better with a D300, but the thought that it might is what keeps lurking in my mind.

      I hate missing a shot.

      Pentax Optio MX
4445752294 2ea7c1795a Day 96/365 Tools of the Trade

My camera since 2005. I have the original MX (3.2 megapixel), not the depicted MX4, a later model which had simply a bit highger resolution.

Far ahead of its time it does 640×480 video. The auto-focus can get in the way their but the quality is above "good enough": VHS and a bit better.

The *best* thing about the camera though is that it has a built-in 10 x optical zoom .. and you can screw on additional lenses.

When my first one fell and started to act up I bought another one on eBay icon smile Day 96/365 Tools of the Trade

Over the years I’ve gotten to know the camera and know what it does and when. Others had problems with the odd balance point of the camera, often shooting with one hand and Pentax unfortunately discontinued the line after the MX4.

Drum rolls please.. Today is DAY 100 of the Miskan project. Time flies when you are having a good time. Since Miskan started on my wedding night it means that I have been married for 100 whole days. Anyway lets get back to todays picture. Around 2 years ago I think (probably more) I was reading an article in WIRED magazine about a guy who invented this toy that expands really big from something really small. He later went and started applying this technique in architecture. So since that article I always wanted that toy. Last month, I was watching One Hour Photo with Nat (my wife) and there was a kid in the movie who was playing with that toy. So I told Nat how much I wanted that toy. I couldn’t search for it on the web because I had forgotten what the toy was called and who the creator was. So yesterday night we were at Toys R Us, I was checking out some Hot Wheels when Nat calls me to the back. There it was, Hoberman Spheres. So thats what they were called.. Hoberman Spheres, no wonder I wasnt able to remember the name! Their were 2 Mega Spheres left, a bluish one and an orangish one. We left the place purchasing the blue Mega Sphere. This thing grows big! Starts off as a sphere, maybe 20cm in diameter and then expands to 1.2 meters! Best of all it cost only 7.5KD. Today we went back to get the other orangish Mega Sphere but it turned out someone else had bought it. Sucked, so we ended up buying 2 Mini Spheres (3.250KD each). I was also talking to the employee there, he told me they were currently looking for a bigger place for the store. He also told me they were planning on opening the largest Toys R Us in the world.. in Dubai. Lucky them! So want to watch a video of the Hoberman in action? click here.

I got a phone call from Eastpak & Jansport the other day. They had received a new shipment of bags including some limited edition versions and the guy wanted me to pass by and check them out. So, tonight I passed by with Nat and nibaq to check out the new stuff. Nibaq is still looking for a messenger bag for his new powerbook and I told him he might find something cool there. They always have some really cool stuff, so cool that I always wish I was going on a vacation or something so I could buy a good bag. Last time I travelled I had a terribly small and uncomfortable backpack and I really regret then not getting a better one. This time around when I travel I am gonna get the best backpack I can afford. The coolest thing in the showroom ofcourse is the bright yellow Ducati 1000DS motorbike, and you can have it for only KD3900!

Below is an excerpt from my travel blog. Cheers.

I’m a fan of tiki bars. Catching a tan, staying cool, being able to buy a beer, meeting other people and gazing out over the ocean kept me close to this exotic looking hut at the end of the Grand Velas’ pool in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I only went in the ocean a few times. Maybe I’m getting old, but it was nice to go on a trip and just relax by the poolside.

I used a 10 stop filter in this shot to achieve the smooth clouds in the background. A 10 stop filter lets less light into your camera, thereby increasing the amount of time the shutter speed is open. If I remember correctly, this shot’s exposure time was around 2 minutes. (If you want to see this similar scene without the smooth clouds, I posted one a few days ago. Both evoke a different feeling, although it’s the same image.)

I’ve mentioned it before, but I can’t stress enough how important it is to really understand the basics of a camera and not rely on the ‘automatic’ setting. I recently purchased a completely analog film camera. It has no automatic light sensor, so that the camera knows how long to open the shutter speed or what aperture to set it at. Although I know about the aperture, shutter speeds and ISOs – when it comes to understanding a light and correctly exposing a shot without any help, it’s not easy. It does, however, force you to really understand HOW a camera actually works. Although the digital world has made taking photos much easier, in order to really capture a scene at it’s best, it’s good to know the old analog methods. Whether it’s with filters, manual exposures or even dark room processing methods, learning these ‘old tricks’ and understanding them before you click a button in digital world will help you get the most out of your photography.
